At the 2025 Calgary Expo, I finally, finally got a chance to talk to independent comic creator and all-around good guy (even though he's an Oilers fan) Adriean Koleric. He’s the writer, artist, and creator behind the series TRAKOVI, THE SITTER one-shot comic, and many other works to come. Not only is this guy great to talk to, but damn can he swear up a storm…just like me. Besties alert! Where were we? Right, TRAKOVI! Koleric gives us the inner workings of the series published by SCOUT COMICS and gives us insight on what it’s like to be under contract with a publisher which has been fairly quiet the last little while.
Koleric’s other book, THE SITTER (a one-shot comic), published via Koleric’s label THREE PRESS COMICS, is a psychological “dramedy” about a giant which appears in the Edmonton River Valley, sitting peacefully and not moving. The day the giant appears, is also the same day the dad of the main character, Finn (then 14), takes off on the family. Fast forward to Finn, middle aged, a failed artist who’s running a comic-book store. Constantly, in the background is “the sitter” and Finn’s quest to rid his, and everyone else’s world of this giant.
Koleric goes on to talk about other books he’s been involved in, including DEAD AND STILL DYING for which he did a cover, as well as another cover he did for the book BONEHEADS, and Koleric has a four-page (drawn, written and lettered) story in the PUBLIC DEFENDER anthology, and a couple other awesome comics.
And if you’re attending Edmonton Expo 2025 (Sept. 19 - 21) be sure to check out the panel I’ll be moderating (SO YOU WANT TO BE AN INDIE COMICS CREATOR), featuring Koleric and other creators, as they talk about the ins and outs of being an indie creator, with topics of dealing with small-press publishers, and perhaps why doing it doesn’t automatically come with doom and gloom—haha! Good times.
