One of my favourite creative teams in comics today is definitely Tom King (writer) and Mitch Gerads (artist), and I was beyond happy to interview these two fun gents at the inaugural Fan Expo San Francisco. Their breadth of work is kinda ridiculous—in the best way possible. They keep cranking out hit after hit after hit. But first, we go back to the first comic King ever wrote, The Sheriff of Babylon. He talks about how he initially didn’t want to write about his war experience, but bills had to be paid. However, as King points out, it isn’t a direct accounting due to the fact he was in the CIA so he had to indirectly write about it as a crime series. But the story is derived from the time he spent in Baghdad, Iraq in 2004. This was also the first creative team-up between he and Gerads. Not a bad origin story, that’s for sure. We went on to talk about the backstory behind the Batman and Catwoman wedding arc and how Gerads was brought on to work on the book after the death of artist John Paul Leon. There really is so much to enjoy in this interview so please hit that play button below and enjoy this fantastic conversation with King and Gerads.
