Superstar artist, and all around nice guy, Chris Campana, took time to chat with me about his career in art, writing and comics. During the inaugural Fan Expo San Francisco, we start off chatting about how he got his start. He’s been back in the comic book industry since 2010. Spoiler: I swear pretty much right off the top because I simply couldn’t hold back my love for Campana’s Master of the Universe work—absolutely stellar stuff, to say the very least. He gives his insights on hwo he gets out of his own head when it comes to self doubt, and fightting himself at the table, and even a little insecure at some points. The recent work he’s done on Frank Frazetta’s Death Dealer is something Campana loves, and as he put it:
“Doing anything Frazetta…and I love Spidey and I love Marvel/DC stuff…but doing something Frazetta is an absolute sort of career benchmark kind of thing for me. I was 10 years old when I first saw FIRE AND ICE…I probably should have been older than 10 to see it, but you know, that was not the case (he laughs). Teegra is not 10-year-old friendly.”
Campana’s creator-owned work, The Adventures of Parker Reef, was nominated for multiple Ringo Awards as best artist and best writer, and is a personal project about a terrible thing that happened in his life, which he talks about during our chat. He first shares his love of artist Mike Wieringo and the feeling of being nominated for this book. How about we stop here, and please hit play below and listen to this great Chris Campana interview.
