I had so much fun meeting and talking with Joe Wos at Edmonton Expo 2023. We talked about all things cartooning, his time as current resident artist with the Charles M. Schulz Museum, MazeToons, his multi-Emmy award-winning Cartoon Academy on PBS, and we also talked about his role as the Brand Character Integrity Consultant for StarKist, and its iconic mascot Charlie the Tuna. Before I go on, I must also apologize to Joe for woefully mispronouncing his last name at the start of our interview. Sorry about that, Joe.
One astonishing thing I learned when chatting with Wos is the fact that his show, Cartoon Academy, is filmed on the same set as the iconic Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood. Wos goes on to tell me a great story about himself as a punk-rock kid (at the age of 14) and the first time he met Mr. Rogers, and the assumption Fred Rogers made about the young Joe Wos. Along with discussing his superb career to date, we discuss the connections we make in our lives and Wos says how astounded he is when people recognize him, and the amazing feeling he gets when people share the inspiration they’ve received from him and what he has done for them.
