While at the 15th anniversary of the Calgary Expo, I chatted with artist Andrew Thomas. His work spans Secret Stash Press (via Kevin Smith), Dark Horse, BOOM!, Image and more. One of the books Thomas and I first talk about—which is oh-so Canadian—AURIC OF THE GREAT WHITE NORTH. It’s the story of northern Ontario’s greatest superhero, Auric, who protects the town of Timmins. Written by co-creator and writer David Dewsbury, it gives a small town its very own big hero. Auric used to be a gold miner in 1912 and his journey into heroism started while he was mining. A mysterious gas was released effecting everyone at the time. Thus, turning them all into beasts. Fast forward to today where Auric is now retired, but is forced to fight beasts once again. Thomas and I go on to chat in-depth about the hero Auric, as well as the origin story of working with Kevin Smith. It started back in 2020 when Thomas was making and sharing out his fan art on his social channels. Lo and behold, Smith liked and commented on Thomas;’s work. Shortly after that, one of Smith’s reps contacted Thomas and asked him to get involved in working with them on some properties, including working on the Jay & Silent Bob characters on some other projects to come. But no sense in continuing to read about it here. Hit play on our interview and listen to Thomas talk about his art, and the lettering side of his career that has seen him work with companies such as Disney and more. Enjoy.
