The following interview was recorded, and written by Chris Doucher, Managing Editor for GeekNerdNet.

I recently sat down over a couple of beers and interviewed Rick Overwater (writer) and Cam Hayden (artist), the creative team behind the super fun series, Futility. Below is a bit of background and my thoughts on Futility Volume 5. Go ahead and give that a read, or if you’d like to read it later and listen to the interview, hit play on the Soundcloud link below. In comics, there are few creators who can better tap into the truly weird and out there stories than Overwater and Hayden, the hilarious duo behind the comic series Futility. When I first met and interviewed these two gents a few years back, I said that Futility was the weirdest fucking space comic I had read in a long time. And I meant that sincerely, of course. Well, four issues later they’ve released the latest double-sized instalment of Futility (Volume 5), this time published by Coffin Hop Press. It’s bigger, it’s weirder, and it’s a hell of a lot of fun! And you know what? This book is definitely still the weirdest fucking space comic out there. Volume 5 is accessible to the fans who have followed along with the series from the beginning, but it’s also a great jumping on point for new fans as well. The writing by Overwater is tops in story telling with fantastic pace, and Hayden’s art is just as far out there as you want in a story that’s set far out there in space.

Do yourself a favour and jump on board with Futility volume 5. And, if you’re going to be at the Saskatoon Expo this weekend (September 15 & 16) you can meet Hayden and pick up Futility volume 5, as well as the first four issues (while they last), and you can also catch Hayden and Overwater at the Edmonton Expo September 21-23.
