Cover of Darkness co-writer/creator, George Michail and I caught up at Fan Expo Vancouver 2020. When I first met Michail (with his co-writer, Chris Cam) at the 2019 Calgary Expo, our interview at that time was the first one they had ever done, but you’d never know it. The passion Michail has for creating has only jumped leaps and bound in the past 10 months. The series - COVER OF DARKNESS (with art by MJ Hiblen) - has followed up on its initial three issues (volume one) with issues 4, 5 and 6 collected in volume 2.
The story is set in medieval Romania and it follows a family that is separated from one another and the adventures that take place when they come face-to-face with some of the scariest monsters out there. Volume one delighted readers with classic monsters including, vampires, werewolves, the mummy, frankenstein and the creature from the black lagoon. In the second volume, the creature from the black lagoon is still making itself known, along with new beings from the fantasy side of things, like dragons, gryphons, orcs and goblins, as well as the always cool sounding: viking werewolves! Now that should make you want to start reading this series, right? Right!
If you want to talk about a creator with a lot endurance, then look no further than Michail. The year that was 2019 saw him attend 16 conventions - 16! And yes, he’s still standing. Here’s how he sums up the year that was: “I went all over the place…Vancouver, Calgary, New York, New Orleans, Los Angeles…I did it rock n’ roll style. Sleeping in my van…just grinding it out.”
Michail tells all about that and his book in the full audio interview. And be sure to listen to his simple, yet very important advice about making connections.
Also, please make sure you check out the Cover of Darkness Kickstarter, and support this series. This campaign has one of the most original videos I have seen to date.
