It has been one year since I first interviewed comic writer, Dan Slott, so I was more than excited to interview him again at the 2025 Calgary Expo. This year, though, Slott is now with DC and writing the Superman Unlimited series. He said he jumped on this title because of James Gunn’s involvement with the new Superman movie from Warner Brothers DC Studios. What you may not know is DC has approached Dan to write for them three times in recent years, and the third time really was the charm because he’s writing an exceptionally fun story in Superman Unlimited. It’s absolutely out of this world. Having made the leap from Marvel to DC—after so many years of writing Spider-Man and so many other iconic characters for that company—he finally gets to put his hands back in the DC mix. Slott says this about the excitement of writing Superman:

”Superman, along with Spider-Man is up on my Mt. Rushmore of superheroes…so this time I have no excuse, I’m ready.“

When it comes to all the ideas swirling around in his head of any character on any given day, Slott talks about how when you get the idea, you need to write it down and just how important it is to write it down right then and there. This way, ideas don’t get missed and you’ve got ideas to draw from for when you need them. Exactly what he has done with Superman Unlimited. He’s now jumping back into his DC/Superman ideas folder to draw from. Slott confidently talks about how Gunn on DC—especially, Superman—is something he’d roll the dice on in a heartbeat.

When looking at what’s to come, Slott seems genuinely excited of titles he can work on because he’s essentially a free agent. This allows him to try writing so many things he’s always wanted to. Slott teased about other companies and properties he is excited to write about. We even looped back around and chatted about Slott’s love of DOCTOR WHO, and he emphatically said “yes, absolutely!’ to writing more DOCTOR WHO stories.

All right, hit play below and enjoy the full interview with the ever-awesome Dan Slott.
